La Trattoria Italiana is a family run Italian restaurant and true foodie destination on the Sunshine Coast, offering authentic Italian food with a West Coast influence, along with fresh seafood and a unique waterfront dining experience surrounded by nature.

Originally from Milano, the Cogrossi family brings over 33 years of experience, blending Northern Italian recipes with West Coast cuisine. Chef Aldo Cogrossi, together with his son Paolo, creates seasonal dishes inspired by what is fresh and locally available.

With a strong farm to table approach, many ingredients are grown right here on the property, including fresh salad greens, basil, and herbs, bringing vibrant flavors and a true connection to the land. Combined with Ocean Wise seafood and regular fresh deliveries, the focus is always on quality and sustainability.

Our menu reflects the true meaning of a trattoria, a traditional Italian family run restaurant focused on fresh, seasonal ingredients rather than a large menu. Rather than offering a long list of items, we focus on doing fewer dishes exceptionally well, from pasta dishes and fresh seafood to vegetarian options, carefully selected meat dishes, and homemade desserts, all prepared from scratch the traditional way.

From aperitifs and appetizers to incredible desserts, the experience is designed to feel complete, balanced, and satisfying. One of our most popular dishes is our seafood platter, featuring clams, mussels, and scallops sautéed with fresh garlic and white wine, a simple but unforgettable combination that reflects the heart of Italian cooking.

What makes this place truly unique is not only the food, but the experience. The family touch, the atmosphere, the music, and the fusion of cultures all come together to create something memorable. It is the kind of place where time slows down, where a glass of Prosecco, a bruschetta, and a plate of fresh mussels can turn into an unforgettable evening.

Surrounded by a protected bird sanctuary, the experience is deeply connected to nature. The constant sound of birds creates a peaceful, almost unreal setting, and if you are lucky, you may even spot one of our resident bald eagles passing by as you enjoy your dinner.

Most evenings, you will find yourself seated on our waterfront patio, right next to the lagoon, or on the upper patio overlooking Ruby Lake. You may catch a beaver quietly passing by, or see two or three bald eagles gliding above, completing a setting that feels both wild and peaceful.

Our staff has been trained over many years and is extremely courteous and well informed. Guests are welcomed in multiple languages, including French and Italian, with an understanding of Spanish, reflecting a natural blend of cultures.

The restaurant itself feels like a bird’s nest, an eclectic mix of Italian character and Indonesian craftsmanship. Much of the furniture is reclaimed, brought from Indonesia after the tsunami, where wood from destroyed buildings was repurposed and transformed into the tables and chairs you see today.

During his long travels through Indonesia, Giorgio, a member of the Cogrossi family, personally sourced and brought back the interior of the restaurant, including many of the tables, chairs, and unique pieces you see throughout the space. From the island of Bali, he also selected a number of beautiful statues and Buddhas that now form part of the restaurant’s identity and atmosphere.

Throughout the space, you will find meaningful details, from statues and artwork to a dedicated shrine honoring our dear friend, the iconic Canadian artist Joni Mitchell.

One entire corner is devoted to the many dinners and moments shared over the past 35 years, a space filled with memories that remain an important part of the restaurant’s story.

Set along the water, our outdoor patio offers one of the most unique waterfront dining experiences on the Sunshine Coast, a perfect setting for food lovers looking to enjoy great food, fresh air, and nature.

We welcome guests who wish to bring their dog, with a limited number of outdoor seating areas available. Fresh water bowls with ice are provided, and your dog is welcome to cool off in the lake before settling beside you during your meal. As we are located within a protected bird sanctuary and near sensitive wildlife areas, including turtle nesting zones, we ask that all pets are kept under control to ensure a respectful coexistence with the natural environment. Please mention your dog when making a reservation so we can allocate the appropriate seating.
